COURTROOM PROCEDURE

Hopefully, the STCP forums won't see too much conflict or rule-breaking. In the event that it does, however, the Courtroom is in place to make sure the repercussions dealt out are fair. The Courtroom can only be seen by staff members, and those placed under "House Arrest". You can find a general description of how the Courtroom system works in the primary "Rules and Conventions" thread, but a more detailed description follows below.

1. A rule is broken to a degree demanding attention.
Just like it says. Note that if a rule is broken insignificantly, a staff member may choose to simply edit/delete/lock the offending post, and PM its author with a warning. Also note that, while all members are encouraged to PM the staff when they feel a rule is being violated, it is up to the staff (or, if conflict arises, solely the admin) to decide whether a rule is being broken, and how serious the infraction is.

2. A staff member creates a topic in the Courtroom.
Hypothetically speaking, let's say that a guy named Dwopple flames someone on the 31st of February in the year 1999, and a staff member feels that it calls for Courtroom attention. That staff member would create a thread titled "2/31/99 - Dwopple: charged with flaming". In this thread, the staff member quotes the offending posts, specifies how this went against the rules, and proposes a punishment from the list further down in this thread.

3. The convicted member is placed under "house arrest".
Being put under house arrest means that you cannot post in any of the "Cavern Hole" forums. Of course, it isn't that grievous of a punishment, but it's mainly meant to catch the rule-breaker's attention.

4. This staff member PMs the one who broke the rules with a "Court Summons".
This PM will be entitled "Court Summons", and will contain a link to the thread created in the Courtroom. If this member continues to post elsewhere without acknowledging the Court Summons and posting in their defense, the punishment proposed by the staff member that created the thread will be put into effect without any further debate.

5. The convicted member replies in their defense.
The member in violation with the rules now has the chance to explain their actions, deny their behavior, argue whether the proposed punishment is fair, or even just accept the charges and punishment, by posting a defensive statement in the topic created.

6. The admin passes a verdict.
With all of that out in the open, I look over the case and come up with a verdict. The punishment is then implemented, and the topic is closed.

Note: replying to a Courtroom topic (while under house arrest) which you have not been summoned to is strictly prohibited.

Possible Verdicts:
* Not Guilty - if "it was all just a big mistake", a convicted member will not, of course, be punished.
* House Arrest - the convicted member's banishment from the Cavern Hole forums is prolonged for a short period of time.
* Temporary Ban - the convicted member is completely removed from the forums for a period of time, which can range from a few days, to a week, to a month.
* Permanent Ban - complete and total removal from the STCP forums.
